National Adoption Day is a collective national effort to raise awareness of
the more than 100,000 children in foster care waiting to find permanent,
loving families. A coalition of national partners – Dave
Thomas Foundation
for Adoption, Congressional Coalition on Adoption
Institute, The Alliance
for Children’s Rights and Children’s Action Network –
sponsor National
Adoption Day.  Over 400 communities throughout the
United States held
an Adoption Day event in 2015.

Tarrant County began holding an Adoption Day event in 2000.  The effort

was started by a small group of dedicated individuals whose goal was to

make a celebration of the most exciting day in the lives of children in foster

care - the day they join their forever family!  The first event was grassroots

with many community partners coming together to make it happen.  Over

the years, the event has grown into a day long celebration with sponsors
donors from all areas of the community.  Children being adopted are
a new stuffed animal of their choosing, a book, a superhero cape and a keychain necklace engraved with their new name and date of adoption. The families receive a yellow rose and the pen the judge uses to sign the Adoption Decree.  And, the family received a framed and matted copy of their first official family photograph taken at the event!

In 2015, we began a Super Hero theme that we hope to continue for many years to come.  Volunteers wore super hero capes.  The adopted children were given a super hero cape to take home.  And, we had approximately 25 adult volunteers dressed as super heroes - anything from Captain America to Black Widow to Batman and Robin.

In 2015, we also started inviting agencies and organizations who provide post adoptive services to the event to share information with the families adopting about the resources available to them after the adoption is final.  This seemed to be a big hit with the organizations and the families and we hope to continue to provide this information to the families in the future.

The final change we made in 2015...we began thanking donors by presenting them with the Proclamation for Adoption Day.  This is a way for the sponsor or donor to present to the community their continued support and for Adoption Day's committee to show its support.  In 2015, we presented the Proclamation to Kube's Jewelry and in 2016 to Tarrant County Bar Foundation.

Tarrant County's Adoption Day event exists under the umbrella of a 501(c)(3) organization called Community Partners of Tarrant County.  This organization helps meet some of the emergency needs of children assisted by CPS -- clothes, diapers, formula, car seats, etc.  Money donated to Community Partners for Adoption Day is earmarked for use only at the event.
